Sonicity is one person; Ben Hamilton, a London-born, Guildford-bred, Norfolk-based bloke. Ben first became interested in audio in his early teens experimenting with tape loops and progressing to samplers and 4-track recorders. In the late 1980's he started dj-ing and producing mix tapes (in the traditional sense). Fuelled by a desire to spread his literary and musical outpourings to the masses he produced a hip hop fanzine/magazine called 'JUICE'. This was innovative in the sense that the UK had never seen a magazine with a regular mixtape included. Ben has never been the sort of person to stick to any one moniker and up to this point was known -among other names - as Kid Kaos, DJ Shadow (before someone else took it), DJ Beatdown, MCB, Benzini, Repo and DJ Sureshot. He began collaborating with a Guildford MC, Lazy Ace and together made demos and put on regular dj nights. This decade he has begun producing his own music as well as performing remix duties for various artists. Recently he has been working and performing with local Norwich band Liza Wolfe and is looking to be coming up with some very original material with them.
In addition, Ben also makes a monthly radio show on internet station Sensei FM which is a tightly-produced 2-hour musical journey of highly-edited music and nostalgia featuring traditional old school hip hop, funk and 80's experimental tracks. This is tied-in to the hip hop blog he maintains, Ageing B-Boys Unite! which can be found over at www.repo136.blogspot.com Together with Disco Scratch and UK Heroes Of Hip Hop, Ageing B-Boys Unite! completes the trio that is known as 3 The Hard Way, a UK coalition consisting of like-minded individuals dedicated to keeping the spirit of old school British hip hop alive. |
